Transforming Pipeline Management: Uncovering Critical Layout Flaws with Advanced 3D-Mapping and Precise Positioning Technology
Overview
A client of ours recently acquired a buried pipeline in a high-consequence corridor between several tank farms and government-owned jetties. To ensure regulatory compliance and proper operation of the aging asset, the client needed to confirm the as-built layout of the pipeline. Using EMPIT's innovative Current Magnetometry Inspection (CMI) technology and Advanced 3D-Mapping services, we were able to autonomously locate the pipeline's as-built absolute position and reveal major layout flaws.
Challenge
The pipeline industry's evolution has led to increasingly efficient measurement planning and stricter regulations for operators, requiring precise knowledge of the exact and current XYZ position of buried pipelines at all locations. In this case, the client needed accurate and up-to-date 3D pipeline mapping data to meet regulatory requirements and operate the pipeline safely.
Solution
EMPIT's state-of-the-art CMI technology and Advanced 3D-Mapping services were employed to provide accurate 3D position data for every 1 cm of the pipeline. This non-contact magnetic survey enabled precise mapping of pipeline geometry from the earth's surface, accurately capturing pipe geometry, bend radii, and angles. Our AI-based software located the pipeline without any bias from the existing documentation, demonstrating its true layout.
Outcome
The assessment revealed a significant offset from the original plans, including a serious inconsistency leading the pipeline through an overgrown area with heavy vegetation posing a threat to the pipeline's integrity. Our client confirmed that our absolute pipeline positioning results were highly accurate and precise, even with interference from parallel pipelines. EMPIT provided seamless 3D-Mapping data with geocoordinates on a 1 cm measurement grid, which was integrated into the client's Geographic Information System (GIS) to mitigate any risk of incorrect documentation in the HCA.
